Custom Broiler Feed Ration

Broiler feed is a tricky business if you really want to get it right. There are plenty of options at your local feed store to be sure, but when you’re picky like we are, those just aren’t going to cut it. I leaned heavily into Joel Salatin’s broiler feed ration from his book “Pastured Poultry Profits” and made a couple of my own tweaks. As mentioned in early posts, we use Soy Beans (whole) in this ration because of its extremely high protein percentage. But we also embrace the research that has been done to show that soy is less likely to contribute to estrogen elevation in poultry when compared to other factors. We also know that the research done on the negative effects of soy was conducted on its parts, and not the whole roasted bean. Soy bean oil and soy bean meal result from a bit of food processing, which certainly could introduce other contaminants and change the makeup of the nutrient values in soy beans to be unrecognizable when compared to the whole roasted bean which we use, and then grind fresh as part of our broiler feed protocol. In short, we do not believe it is the “demon” it has been made out to be. Otherwise, our feed is straight forward, rich in protein and other vital nutrients, and has resulted in a tremendous cost reduction for us as well as obviously improved health of the broilers we raise.
